December is supposed to be a time of family celebrations, of peace, love and goodwill to each other. Sadly, this is not the case for many with the holiday season seeing increased stress and strain placed on relationships.

Domestic and family violence against women is the single largest driver of homelessness for women, a common factor in child protection notifications, and results in a police call-out on average once every two minutes across the country.

Truths about Domestic Violence:

  • DV is the inappropriate use of power over others

  • DV is a range of abusive behaviours perpetrated by one person over another in order to gain and maintain control.

  • DV is always perpetrated by a more powerful person over a less powerful person. DV is a crime and therefore needs to be acknowledged as such.

  • DV is a reflection of gender inequality.

  • DV occurs across all socio economic and cultural groups.

  • DV damages the wellbeing and future life of all involved.

  • DV takes away women and children’s human right to live safely and free from fear.

  • DV is not always physical – coercive control is also abuse
