FEDERAL MEMBER FOR LONGMAN TERRY YOUNG MP CALLS  ON AUSTRALIANS TO DO THEIR PART TO PROTECT BRIBIE I

Federal Member for Longman Terry Young MP has urged the Queensland Government to take the safety of Bribie Island’s aged residents seriously and ensure the necessary protocols are in place to protect the Island’s locals from the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

Mr Young said he had been contacted by numerous Bribie Island residents who were concerned about visitors and holiday-makers travelling to the island and beaches remaining open for recreational activities.

“Bribie Island is well-known for being a beautiful destination to go for a holiday or a beach trip, however what people need to realise is that Bribie Island also has the highest percentage of aged Australians in Queensland,” Mr Young said.

“Many senior Australians have chosen to put their feet up and spend their retirement in Bribie Island. We owe it to every single resident who call this island home to ensure that the proper precautions are put in place to make sure they are protected and safe.

“The Prime Minister has made it clear that you can only leave your home for essential reasons such as doing your grocery shopping, going to medical appointments, exercising and going to work. These measures, as well as strong distancing measures, have been put in place for a reason, so that we can help prevent the spread of the coronavirus.

“On the basis of health advice, it is recommended that people over the age of 70 stay-at-home and limit contact with others as much as possible.

“We know that social distancing works – and every Australian has their own part to play.”

Mr Young said he was reinforcing State Member for Pumicestone Simone Wilson MP’s message that visitors ‘please stay away’ and to only venture over the bridge and go to Bribie Island for essential services.

“I am asking those looking at coming to Bribie Island for a day trip or a holiday to please save your trip for the future, once this is all over. We need to limit the island’s visitors to only those visiting the island for essential purposes, like going to and from work and medical appointments.

“We want to protect Bribie Island’s older residents and we can’t do it if other Australians aren’t playing their part. So please stay home unless it’s for essential reasons.

“Even though the many at risk community on Bribie may not be your mum, your dad, your nan or your pop, they are someone else’s and they don’t want them getting this virus. I implore people to be considerate of others.   

“Remember, stay strong, stay safe and stay positive, we will get through this.”
