BreastScreen back on Bribie

When did you last have a breast screening done? If you aren’t sure or it’s time to schedule that appointment, you’re in luck. The free BreastScreen Queensland mobile service will be back on Bribie Island at the end of January. This year there will be some changes in store.

“Women have told us that they need more flexible appointments to fit in with busy schedules, so we will be providing more appointments between 3pm and 5.30pm this year,” health promotion officer Gillian Duffy said. “Women with work, study or caring commitments will be able to find an appointment at a time which suits them.”

BreastScreen Queensland offers free breast screening for women aged 40 years and over. Research shows that, for women aged 50 to 75 years, a breast screen every two years is the best way to detect breast cancer early, increasing treatment options and improving outcomes.

Appointments are available from 7.45am and take less than 30 minutes. No referral is needed.

“Our resolution for 2024 is to make it even easier for women to have their free breast screen,” Gillian said. “Make it your resolution to pick up the phone or jump online and book that all-important appointment today.”

The BreastScreen mobile service will be at Bribie Island Library from January 29 until February 23, 2024. Alternatively, there is also a permanent service at the Lakes Centre in King Street, Caboolture offering early, late and Saturday appointments.

THE FACTS:

  • 75% of women diagnosed with breast cancer are over 50. Younger women do get breast cancer, but the risk of breast cancer increases significantly after the age of 50.

  • 9 out of 10 women diagnosed with breast cancer have NO family history of the disease. While women with a family history of breast cancer are more at risk, most women diagnosed have no family history of the disease at all.

  • A breast screen every two years is the best way to detect breast cancer early, well before you or your doctor can feel anything.
