On the 19th October 1963 the bridge was officially opened and Bribie Island was no longer a little island off the east coast of Qld.
Bribie Island Chamber of Commerce was inaugurated on Tuesday 27th November 1963

THE STATE GOVERNMENT ATTEMPT TO RETARD BRIDGE:
The Bribie Bridge, a modern prestressed concrete structure across Pumicestone Passage neared completion in 1963 published advice when the State Government agreed to build the bridge, was to pay for it by sales of Crown land on the Island, The building of the bridge had created record land sales and, according to newspaper reports, already covered the cost of the bridge.
Without warning, The State Government announced it would slow development on Bribie Island to impose a heavy toll on the Bribie Bridge.
Suddenly the community was in the midst of a storm, using words such as treachery, deceit, trickery and dishonesty.
Needed was an organisation, above politics, to represent all the community. A Chamber of Commerce met that requirement.
