Connor McLachlan has conquered the Bribie Island Golf Course once again, winning his 10th straight Men’s Club Championship, creating history at Bribie Island Golf Club. The 26-year-old has now dominated the club’s biggest individual event for a full decade, but this year’s championship was certainly not an easy one.
The A Grade Men’s Club Championship was closer than ever, with McLachlan having to fight through an injury and overcome a two-shot deficit heading into the final round. It was a fairytale finish to a championship that could have ended very differently. After playing two straight days of championship golf the week before round three, McLachlan arrived at the course in early morning rain with a neck injury that had him seriously considering pulling out of the competition. On the first hole, he said he could “barely swing it past halfway”, making it difficult to see how he could continue and defend his nine-year winning streak.
McLachlan spoke about how his good mate and playing partner, Jake MacGregor, helped convince him not to pull out of the competition. The conversation proved to be a massive moment in the championship, as McLachlan was able to push through the injury and keep his chances of winning the 10th Club Championship alive. Without that encouragement, the story could have been very different.
After a shaky first three rounds by McLachlan’s standards, he found himself sitting in second place, trailing another Bribie member by two shots. Despite being behind, there was still plenty of reason for McLachlan to believe he could get the job done. The biggest advantage for the defending champion was that it had become a two-horse race for the title, with the other competitors effectively playing for their finishing positions.
When McLachlan was interviewed before the final round, he described himself as feeling “confident”. He certainly played like he was, coming out of the blocks firing with a three-under-par, bogey-free front nine. With his closest competitor unable to produce his best golf, McLachlan quickly took control of the championship and built a strong lead. From there, the challenge was simply to play smart golf, avoid unnecessary mistakes and make sure the 10th Club Championship was his.
With the final holes approaching, a large group of Bribie members gathered behind the 18th green to cheer McLachlan home. After the injury, the two-shot deficit and a difficult opening three rounds, he was now just one putt away from history. McLachlan calmly sunk his final putt of the day to finish one-under-par for the final round and win the championship by six strokes, completing an incredible comeback in front of his fellow members.
When asked what helped him power through his injury in the fourth round and take the championship, McLachlan replied, “probably a combination of determination, experience and really wanting to win that 10th Club Champs.” Those qualities were certainly on display as he fought through the pain and pressure to once again finish on top.
It truly is a remarkable story of determination and another memorable chapter in McLachlan’s incredible run at Bribie Island Golf Club. Winning one Club Championship is an achievement many golfers would be proud of, but winning 10 straight is something very few players will ever accomplish. The scary part for the rest of the field is that McLachlan is still only 26 years old, meaning he could potentially rule the Bribie Island Golf Club Men’s Championship for decades to come.
