Fishing with Paul

Headed out fishing at 4am on May 5, straight after the full moon. The moon was perfect, tide was good and with the stars aligned all things pointed to another good day.
As the swell was 2.5-3m we headed straight to the cape – I wasn’t crossing the wild banks in that! Arrived at Comby Point right on first light after easily making it through the breakers. And that my friends is where the prefect day ended.
The cape greeted us with a very sloppy 3m of S/E swell and 10 knots of wind from the N/W. Conditions couldn’t get much worse with wind against swell.
Started at a rock N/E of the cape as plenty of fish showing. First drop, each of us hooked a nice Pearl Perch. Sadly, neither of them made it up with our friends in the grey overcoats stealing our prize. Oh well….no biggie – just move on - right!
Moving 2.5 miles north to a bigger area 70m east of Hutchison Shoal, we thought we could give the sharks the run around by continually moving a few hundred metres. Nope! Covered five spots along that reef area and those predators of the sea were on everyone.
Not to be put off, we kept moving north up to Jennifer Kay wreck – same story. Trying not to be deterred, we moved to the southern end of Caloundra wide. Success at last! No sharks and a good patch of fish. Within 15 minutes we hauled two Rosy Jobfish, three Pearlies at 51, 54 and 65 and a good Tuskfish. However another 15 minutes and you guessed it - they showed up again.
As we had to travel seven miles back towards the Cape to navigate the wild banks, a decision was made to head off home. Halfway to Yellow Patch the wind died off moving to the S/E affording us a beautiful glassy run home.
If it’s not your day – it’s NOT your day.
Here’s hoping the weather breaks soon.
Remember if you see me out – say HI!
