Speeding Prompts Pumicestone Passage Safety Review

Maritime Safety Queensland (MSQ) is currently looking at overhauling Pumicestone Passage speed limits following safety concerns voiced by boaties and swimmers over the speeds of craft in sheltered waters, particularly on the stretch of from Bells Creek north to Bulcock Beach.

Presently, a six-knot zone is in force within 100 metres of the shore between Military Jetty on Golden Beach and Bulcock Beach, but the rest of this relatively narrow waterway can be used at up to 40 knots. The review could see speeds in some of those areas reduced, with a 20-knot zone implemented from Military Jetty to Minchinton Street, Caloundra. The narrow and shallow lower reach of Bells Creek, with many anchored and moored vessels and other craft using the public boat ramp, could become a six-knot zone.

Public consultations will close on 30 November 2021 and local boaties and stakeholders are encouraged to contact the MSQ review team directly on (07) 5373 2310 or via Sunshinecoast.maritime@msq.qld.gov.au to provide feedback on the changes.
