STEER A STEADY COURSE...

Keeping your boat on a straight course can be made easier by adjusting the Trim Tab on your Outboard or Stern Drive.

The trim tab is designed to be adjustable, so it counteracts the torque of the propellor. If the adjustment is out, the steering will pull either left or right.

By setting the trim tab in the correct position it will have the same effect as

getting a wheel alignment on your car.

In other words, it steers straight.

The method to do the adjustment is:-

  • Mark where the tab is currently fixed.

  • Loosen off the retaining bolt.

  • Rotate the tab slightly.

  • Retighten the bolt and do a water test.

If it is not right, continue adjusting the tab. It is a bit of trial and error.

However, when set correctly you will notice an improvement in steering stability.

On most Outboards or Stern drives the trim tab also has a second job. Made out of Zinc, which is a very soft metal, it protects the lower drive unit from corrosion. It is a service item which should be replaced if it looks worn.

If you think your boat has any Steering or Trim issues, your local Marine Dealer is the right person to solve any problems.
