Toorbul Esplanade Foreshore parkland to honour local

Toorbul is set to celebrate the life’s work of local legend Noel Downes, by proposing to name an area of foreshore park in front of the Toorbul Community Hall and Sports Centre ‘Noel Downes Place’ in his honour.

Councillor for Division 1 Brooke Savige said she was thrilled to receive the application and that the proposed park was the most appropriate place to recognise his legacy in the local community.

“The Toorbul Community Hall and Sports Complex is standing where it is today because of the hard work Noel Downes to secure that land from the State Government back in 1975,” she said.

“He campaigned tirelessly to help raise the $100,000 needed to build the centre, hosting auction nights, Christmas parties and even wine and cheese events at his own home to help the community.

“I hope our younger-generation will follow in Mr Downes footsteps and look at different ways they can contribute and support their community.”

Cr Savige said she fully supports the proposal.

“We will put the proposal out for public advertisement and discussion over the next month,” she said.

Council is now seeking public feedback on the proposal. Submissions close 5pm Wednesday, 10 October 2018.
