LOWER LEG OUTBOARD SERVICE

The gearbox and propeller are very important parts of your outboard motor and require regular servicing.

STEP 1

Remove the prop split pin or tab washer. Then undo the prop nut and slide the prop off. Take careful note of which way any tapered thrust washers are fitted; it is very important that they be refitted correctly. With the prop is off it’s a good time to file out any uneven or damaged blade surfaces.

STEP 2

Remove the lower gearbox oil drain plug, then the top oil level plug. If there are any signs of water contamination in the gearbox oil STOP right there!! 

It’s now a job for your marine mechanic. Most outboards have oil seals to keep oil in and water out of the gearshift shaft, driveshaft, and the prop-shaft. Always check the prop-shaft to make sure it has no fishing line wrapped around it, as this can damage the prop-shaft seal.

STEP 3

Now it’s time to visit your local marine dealer. You will need gear oil bottle with pump, new split pin or prop tab washer, new gearbox drain-bung washers and a good quality marine grease. Your local marine dealer will advise you on the right products for the job.

STEP 4

Connect the gear oil pump to the bottom bung hole. Slowly work the pump until oil flows out of the top oil level bung hole. Filling the gearbox from the bottom up avoids any air pockets and confirms that the gearbox is full. Now put the top bung in first. This creates a vacuum allowing you to remove the gear oil bottle and replace the lower-level bung with minimum oil loss.

STEP 5

Apply a good coating of marine grease on the prop-shaft then refit the propeller.

Job Done, you're ready to go.
