For the first time in its 35 year existence, The Probus Club of Bribie Island Inc recently ventured north on an overnight outing comprising a five day stay in the Capricornia Coast’s popular coastal town of Yeppoon. Organised by full service travel agency travel at 60, the last remaining 16 places were snapped up by the club’s tours officer, Gabrielle Bain, on behalf of eight club members and their wives. All boarded QR’s tilt train at Caboolture Railway Station in early December for the seven hour trip to Rockhampton, where staff from Yeppoon’s Bayview Tower apartments conveyed the group to their accommodation.
The comprehensive itinerary constructed by travel at 60 covered a number of major attractions, including Waterpark Farm’s Byfield tea tree oil production facility, The Capricorn Caves, one of the largest privately owned cave systems in Australia and Shell World, a collection of over 20,000 marine, land and fossil molluscs. Bus tours of much of the local area also was organised by travel at 60, including visits to Emu Park, Byfield, Lammermore, Wreck Point and Rosslyn Bay Marina.
The group was entertained each evening by an eclectic mix of artists, the most memorable being a presentation by a local bush poet who revealed a Japanese claim that Australia had hijacked their original version of Waltzing Matilda’s lyrics. He brought us all to tears with his rendition of the Japanese version, dressed in a kimono with a rising sun-embossed head scarf and thick lens glasses, substituting the words ninja, samurai and rirripond in the appropriate spots. The Japanese lyrics include a claim that the swagman drowned due to the weight of his samurai armour. Great stuff!
