Australia is a country of freedom and mateship. As we get caught up in the hustle and bustle of everyday lives, we often forget the sacrifices made to ensure we can experience our current freedoms. We would not be where we are today without the brave men and women who have dedicated their lives to protecting us and our country.
On November 11 every year a we observe a Day of Remembrance for those who have so valiantly given their lives in the line of duty. On this day we acknowledge both retired and active participants within the army, navy, and air forces. We thank them for their bravery, their honour, and their sacrifices. It is because of their dedication, perseverance and courage that we are able to experience such liberties today.
This day also provides a moment to recognise and thank nurses, doctors and medical support teams who continue to place themselves at risk in their efforts to return our wounded soldiers home. Their personal sacrifices must also be honoured.
For many, this day is a painful reminder of friends and family who are no longer with them. For us, as a country, this day is one of ultimate respect. We also must acknowledge those who currently serve our country, as they continue to make difficult decisions, often remaining separated from families. However, it is because of their sacrifices that we are able to live in a free country, as they put themselves on the front lines.
Many of us will never fully understand the trials and sacrifices these brave individuals endure. However, in honouring this day we ensure that their stories are not forgotten. It allows us to share with younger generations a history of our country and helps them to gain appreciation for the smaller things they may take for granted. As a community, we can show our support and respect by attending services and observing the one-minute silence. The silence lets us show our gratitude to those who have given their lives for our country. It allows us to reflect on those who have been involved in past and current conflicts.
So many have given everything to defend their country and our freedoms. It falls upon us to remember, honour and respect those who have made the ultimate sacrifice. Through our actions we will continue to keep their stories and spirits alive.
Lest We Forget.
