Wild sea bird brings bird flu to Queensland shores
By Sheree Hoddinett Bird flu has been detected in Queensland, a month after the disease first found its way to Australian shores on the other side of the country. While thankfully not on Bribie Island, the Sunshine State has recorded one confirmed case of the H5 high pathogenicity avian influenza (H5 bird flu). A deceased migratory seabird (a petrel) was discovered on Moreton Island on July 18. The positive result for H5 bird flu was later confirmed by the CSIRO's Aust

Life in the butterfly lane
By Sheree Hoddinett Retirement was supposed to slow Kym Turner down, but instead it sparked a new passion that now has her happily jumping out of bed before dawn most days. Nearly four years ago, after finishing work, Kym was searching for something meaningful to do with her time. A visit to the Bribie Island Butterfly House was meant to be the start of a small volunteering role. Instead, she found a purpose she never expected. “I just love being here,” Kym said. “I just ca

One Nation’s surge — A view from Queensland
Looking around from Queensland right now, the national political map feels like it’s being redrawn in real time, and the big story is Pauline Hanson’s One Nation. Since Labor’s win in May 2025, One Nation’s primary vote has climbed from about 6–7% to regularly sitting in the mid-to-high 20s, with some recent polls indicatingit’s been level with or ahead of Labor on first preferences. Pollsters have it somewhere between 24% and 31% depending on the week, with the Coalition (L

Fishing Report: Mid-July to early August 2026 – Bribie Island & Pumicestone Passage
G’day all, hope the winter fishing has been treating you well. With the local reports coming through, here is my general overall take on land-based fishing within the Bribie Island and Pumicestone Passage channels, flats and canals from mid-July through to early August. The strong south-easterlies have limited consistent effort at times, but when the weather has settled the passage and accessible shore spots have continued to fish steadily in classic winter fashion.

Preparing for change
G’day gardeners, There’s a shift happening - the days are stretching a little longer, the winter chill is easing and those first hints of spring warmth are starting to work their way into our sandy soils. August is the perfect month to get ahead of the change and set your garden up for a strong season ahead. Here in our coastal subtropical pocket — from Bribie across to the Moreton Bay mainland and up toward the southern Sunshine Coast — the conditions are mild; the frosts

Finals hopes slip away from Broncos By Chase Christensen
Just 12 months after celebrating a long-awaited premiership, the Brisbane Broncos find themselves in one of the most dramatic falls from grace the NRL has seen in recent memory. Heading into their Round 20 clash against Penrith (July 16), Brisbane had lost eight consecutive games and were sitting fourth last on the ladder, with its finals hopes hanging by a thread. It is difficult to remember a reigning premier enduring a collapse of this magnitude the following season. The

Winter lawn care on Bribie Island and the Sunshine Coast: Keeping your grass healthy through the cooler months.
G'day, Bribie locals! As winter settles over the Pumicestone Passage and surrounding areas, your lawn might slow down, but that doesn't mean you can ignore it. Bribie Island's sandy, well-draining soils and mild subtropical winters (cooler nights, drier periods with occasional wet spells) bring specific challenges for common warm-season grasses like couch (including Queensland blue couch), buffalo and kikuyu. With shorter days and lower temperatures, grass growth slows signi
